A mention of our group and guest speaker Jim Lackie, husband of former secretary Eileen, in a 2014 Toronto Star column by Joe Fiorito. He graciously attended the meeting and heard Jim speak on hydro corridors.
Jim let me know that he’d be speaking, and I got myself invited to the meeting. I had not known about the TACW. It is part of a larger national group of women’s councils formed in 1893 for the purpose of advocating on behalf of children and women.
They are smart people with a social conscience who belong to the Toronto council, and they like to lend their collective voice to many issues, writing letters and arguing, for example, against the idea of a casino, and for the preservation of a program providing dental care for Toronto’s poor.
The meeting began with a moment of silence for “those who can’t be with us.” There were regrets sent by others unable to attend. But there were no printed minutes from the last meeting. “The machine is in the shop,” said Eileen; instead, there was a concise verbal reminiscence of those minutes, of which all were in favour. Then they agreed to sign a petition urging for an inquiry into the missing aboriginal women.
Frankly, if I were a smart woman with a quick wit and a social conscience, if I were available for daytime meetings, and if I wanted to add my voice to the issues of the day, I would join.”
